Keep Your Pool Sparkling: A Guide to Cleaning Every Type of Pool Filter

A crystal-clear swimming pool is the centerpiece of summer fun, but behind that pristine water is a hardworking hero: the pool filter. Your pool's filter system is responsible for removing dirt, debris, and other contaminants, ensuring your water is clean and safe for swimming. But for your filter to do its job effectively, it needs regular cleaning.

This guide will walk you through the different types of pool filters, their unique benefits, and the specific cleaning methods for each. Understanding how to properly maintain your pool filter will not only keep your pool looking its best but also extend the life of your equipment.

The Foundation of a Clean Pool: Understanding Filter Types

There are three main types of pool filters, each with its own method of filtration and maintenance routine.

1. Cartridge Filters: The Low-Maintenance Option

Cartridge filters are a popular choice for their ease of use and excellent filtration capabilities. These filters use a pleated fabric cartridge to trap debris.

Benefits of Cartridge Filters:

 * Superior Filtration: They can capture smaller particles than sand filters, resulting in exceptionally clear water.

 * Water Conservation: They don't require backwashing, a process that can waste hundreds of gallons of water.

 * Energy Efficient: They operate at lower pressure than sand filters, which can reduce your energy consumption.

 * Easy to Maintain: Cleaning is straightforward and less frequent than other filter types.

2. Sand Filters: The Tried-and-True Classic

Sand filters are the oldest and one of the most common types of pool filters. They work by passing pool water through a bed of specially graded sand, which traps dirt and debris.

Benefits of Sand Filters:

 * Cost-Effective: They are generally the most affordable type of pool filter.

 * Low Maintenance: The sand only needs to be replaced every 5-7 years.

 * Simple to Clean: The backwashing process is relatively quick and easy.

3. Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) Filters: The Polishing Powerhouse

Diatomaceous earth filters offer the highest level of filtration, capable of trapping microscopic particles. These filters use grids coated in D.E., a fine powder made from the fossilized remains of tiny aquatic organisms.

Benefits of D.E. Filters:

 * Unmatched Clarity: They provide the clearest, most sparkling water by filtering out the smallest contaminants.

 * Highly Effective: D.E. can remove particles that are invisible to the naked eye.

How to Clean Your Pool Filter: A Step-by-Step Guide

Regular cleaning is crucial for optimal filter performance. The cleaning method will depend on the type of filter you have.

Cleaning a Cartridge Filter: A Simple Rinse

You'll know it's time to clean your cartridge filter when the pressure gauge on your filter tank reads 8-10 PSI (pounds per square inch) above its normal clean operating pressure.

What You'll Need:

 * Garden hose with a spray nozzle

 * Filter cleaning solution (optional, for deep cleaning)

 * A bucket

Step-by-Step Instructions:

 * Turn Off the Power: Always start by turning off the pool pump at the circuit breaker.

 * Release the Pressure: Open the air relief valve on top of the filter tank to release any built-up pressure.

 * Remove the Lid: Carefully remove the filter lid. This may involve unscrewing a locking ring or removing clamps.

 * Take Out the Cartridge: Gently pull the filter cartridge out of the tank.

 * Rinse Thoroughly: Using your garden hose, spray the cartridge from top to bottom, making sure to get between each pleat to remove all the trapped debris. Avoid using a high-pressure nozzle, as this can damage the filter fabric.

 * Deep Clean (if necessary): For a more thorough cleaning, you can soak the cartridge in a filter cleaning solution according to the manufacturer's instructions. This will help remove oils and other stubborn buildup.

 * Inspect for Damage: Before reinstalling, check the cartridge for any tears or cracks. A damaged cartridge will need to be replaced.

 * Reassemble: Carefully place the clean cartridge back into the filter tank, secure the lid, and close the air relief valve.

 * Turn the Power Back On: Turn the pool pump back on and check the pressure gauge to ensure it's back to its normal starting pressure.

Cleaning a Sand Filter: The Backwashing Process

For sand filters, cleaning involves a process called backwashing, which reverses the flow of water through the filter to flush out the trapped dirt and debris. You should backwash your sand filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 PSI above its clean operating pressure.

What You'll Need:

 * Backwash hose

Step-by-Step Instructions:

 * Turn Off the Power: Turn off the pool pump.

 * Set to "Backwash": Turn the multiport valve handle to the "BACKWASH" position.

 * Connect the Hose: Attach the backwash hose to the backwash port on the multiport valve. Make sure the other end of the hose is in a safe area where the dirty water can drain away from the pool.

 * Turn the Pump On: Turn the pool pump back on and let it run for 2-3 minutes, or until the water running through the backwash hose is clear.

 * Turn the Pump Off: Turn off the pool pump.

 * Set to "Rinse": Turn the multiport valve handle to the "RINSE" position. This will resettle the sand bed.

 * Turn the Pump On: Turn the pump on and let it run for about 30 seconds.

 * Turn the Pump Off: Turn off the pool pump.

 * Set to "Filter": Return the multiport valve handle to the "FILTER" position.

 * Turn the Power Back On: Turn the pump back on. Your filter is now clean and ready to go.

Cleaning a D.E. Filter: A Two-Part Process

Cleaning a D.E. filter also involves backwashing, but with the additional step of adding new D.E. powder. Backwash your D.E. filter when the pressure gauge is 8-10 PSI above its normal level.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Backwashing:

 * Follow the Sand Filter Backwashing Steps: The backwashing process for a D.E. filter is the same as for a sand filter (steps 1-9 above).

Adding New D.E. Powder:

After backwashing, you need to add fresh D.E. powder to recoat the filter grids.

 * Determine the Amount: Check your filter's manual to find out the correct amount of D.E. powder your filter requires.

 * Mix the D.E.: In a bucket, mix the D.E. powder with enough water to create a milky-white slurry.

 * Add to the Skimmer: With the pool pump running, slowly pour the D.E. slurry into the pool skimmer closest to the filter system. The pump will draw the D.E. into the filter, where it will coat the grids.

Deep Cleaning D.E. Grids:

At least once a year, you should perform a more thorough cleaning of the D.E. filter grids. This involves disassembling the filter, removing the grids, and manually cleaning them with a hose and a soft brush. For stubborn buildup, you can soak the grids in a D.E. filter cleaner.

How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?

 * Cartridge Filters: Clean every 2 to 6 weeks, depending on pool usage and debris load.

 * Sand Filters: Backwash every 1 to 2 months.

 * D.E. Filters: Backwash every 1 to 2 months and deep clean the grids annually.

By following these guidelines and regularly maintaining your pool filter, you'll ensure your swimming pool remains a clean, safe, and inviting oasis for you and your family to enjoy all season long.
